Employers

Research shows that a healthy workforce is a more productive workforce. Prioritizing health of your staff can lower employee absenteeism, boost employee morale, and lower insurance premiums. Since tobacco use costs over 300 Billion dollars a year in medical care and lost years of life, this is an easy area to make a big impact for you and your workforce.

Some examples of steps you can take to reduce tobacco use:

  • Review smoking and vaping policies to see how you can make existing policies better or start one if you don’t have it. Some examples policies are listed below
  • Check in with your smokers and non-smokers to see what the attitudes are about smoking at your workplace
  • Cover smoking cessation as part of your benefits plan. 70% of smokers say they want to quit, and most people say health concerns are one of their top reasons for wanting to quit. Offering cessation (quitting) resources and counseling has been shown to support people who are trying to quit and improve their chances of successfully quitting.
  • Get feedback from staff about what barriers they have to quitting while at work.
  • Check in with your smokers and non-smokers alike to see what the attitudes are about smoking at your workplace
  • Post the Ohio Tobacco Quitline or your insurance covered quit support resources in places where staff can regularly access it.
