Influenza (Flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. There are two main types of influenza viruses: Type A and Type B.

The best way to prevent getting the flu is to stay up to date on your vaccinations each year.

You may be able to spread flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as when you are sick with symptoms. People with flu are most contagious during the first 3 days of their illness. Some people, including young children and people with weakened immune systems, may be contagious for longer periods of time.

Possible symptoms:

  • fever
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • muscle or body aches
  • headaches
  • fatigue
  • vomiting or diarrhea
